Chief John Mapevanisto Waters
Chief John. Born in 1820. His Parents both born on Montauk: James Waters and Mary Hubbs/ Hicks. John married Elizabeth Townsend. She was a Matinecock. They had thirteen children.
John and his brother Charles Waters and sister Mary Davis were the last generation to speak their native Alongquin tongue.
John passed away in Feb 1903. He and his wife were buried in the family's burial ground on Northern Blvd. in Little Neck.
